Every once in a while the fields rumble
when cuirasses and greaves clatter on the march
and sword and shield rattle in unision
while a robin sings his tune in the thickets,
unaware of the great king's defiant speech,
fuel for the brave and the petrified
should there be any breaks in the line
when the enemy advances in formation
like driver ants marching in a column,
arrows buttering up their impeding obstacle
before steel rings against steel
and dying scream blends with battle cry.

NaPoWriMo #2: Home at the Dawn Chorus
For my second poem in this thirty day odyssey, I present a tale of the dawn chorus as seen from the perspective of an inebriated blackbird. Whoever said poetry needed to be about deep themes?
Home at the Dawn Chorus
A blackbird flutters back to his roost
after a night down the garden
dining on seeds
from an immaculate green feeder
with several perches
wallowing with other birds
in a stone bird bath
after which he clambers into his nest
to sleep off the gorging
and the guzzling
and the slurred singing of Wren of Harlech
only to hear the robin in the next tree
belting out a tenor solo
as the sun rises
and the blackbird curses
the chorus which greets his ears.

NaPoWriMo #1 | Robin on the Fence
Here it is, the first poem of my NaPoWriMo odyssey. Hope it's not too bad. There will be another one tomorrow, hopefully at an earlier time. Watch this space.
Robin on the Fence
My word, the bird feeder
looks a bit empty today.
I guess the magpies
and jackdaws ate their fill.
There's a worm down there,
just poked his head up.
He won't have time
to wish he hadn't.
